Manual Lymph Drainage

WHAT IS MANUAL LYMPH DRAINAGE (MLD)

Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) is a gentle manual treatment that is similar to massage BUT different. It enhances the immune system and reduces edema (swelling).

Manual Lymph Drainage is composed of controlled light pressure strokes that are soothing and manually moves superficial swelling. Every stroke has an active and a resting phase maximizing normal physiological effects on the lymphatic system and structures. MLD was developed by a German/French team in 1930’s. The first school for Manual Lymph Drainage training opened in 1969.  The purpose is to reroute the lymph flow around blocked areas into more centrally located healthy lymph vessels which drain into the venous system so the excess water can be urinate (peed) out of the body. It can benefit a healthy person as well as be applied to more than 60 different conditions.

BENEFITS

  1. Removes metabolic wastes, excess water, bacteria/viruses, large protein molecules and foreign substances from the tissues, and is an important part in complex decongestive therapy for the treatment of lymphedema.

  2. Supports and enhances the action of the immune system.

  3. Helps the body to heal more quickly from injuries, surgical trauma, chronic conditions, and edema.

  4. Helps to minimize scar formation

  5. Through its gentle, rhythmic, and precise hand movements, it alleviates pain by greatly reducing the pain signals sent to the brain.

  6. Relaxes the sympathetic nervous system, thus helping to relieve stress.
